After getting an Industrial in each ear I was very uncertain about what my next piercing should be. My choices were limited since my employers do not permit facial piercings to be worn into work. Three years ago I had to retire my eyebrow ring for that very reason. I browse pictures on BME while on the phone with customers and I found myself constantly staring at pictures of beautiful septum piercings. Everyone scoffed at my love of them but I didn't care.

I didn't tell anyone what I was going to do because I knew that someone would talk me out of it. My mother already makes me make outrageous promises not to put anymore holes in my body even though I am 23. Anyway, I figured Septum piercings were the best because I could just flip it up when I went to work and no one would be the wiser. I was a genius.
I called my friend's girlfriend and told her that she was the one person I wanted to go with me to get my new piercing. She likes tattoo shops as much as I do and didn't mind going with me. There we were in the shop and she asked about a tattoo she wanted to get while I filled out all of the paperwork. Then the piercer came and took us into the back. Halo is one of the cleanest places I have been in. They scrub down everything before and after a piercing or a tattoo as well as talking you through the whole process.
Time to get down to business. The piercer took one look at my nose and said "I'm going to be honest. I can do this but your nose is really small. There is no way you'll be able to flip it up. I don't want to do something you won't be happy with."
Well, I didn't want him to do something I wouldn't be happy with either. I was thankful for the honesty because really he could have done it and made some money and not been as thoughtful as he was. That's the sign of damn good piercer. I still wanted something done, though. Then I remembered!
"Do you know how to do transverse lobes?" I asked.
"I've seen them. If you let me you can be my first ones."
Yay!! I most certainly was okay with that. So, he talked me through his bending of the needle and had me lay on my side. I'll say this: It was a damned slow process. I could feel the needle traveling through the meat of my earlobe. The whole shop was watching which was pretty awesome. Even though it was slow I breathed through the whole thing and it didn't really hurt. My piercer also had a very gentle hand. I turned over and did the whole process over on the other side. There was a good amount of blood and bruising but boy were they gorgeous.
For a week after I got them done the bruising persisted but sea salt soaks and some thorough washings kept my new piercings happy. I got one blackhead on my earlobe but having kept the area clean and dry helped that problem to clear itself right up.
About three weeks after I got my lobes done the bruises really started clearing up but I noticed that there was a thick yellow puss coming out of them whenever I cleaned them. I had stopped doing my sea salt soaks about a week and a half before but I started again once I noticed the puss and that cleared up the problem. I still do the sea slat soaks sometimes.
It was definitely a very slow healing piercing. I think that part of it is that it is a very deep curve seeing that it was pierced with a captive ring and not a bar. The captive ring made cleaning it easier and allowed for the healing process to be pretty pain free. With a bar there would have been a lot of constriction because my ears swelled a lot when they were pierced.
I have yet to see someone else in my area with the same piercings which always makes me smile. I really like going into a shop and asking the piercer or tattoo artist to do something that they feel is a challenge. I also like the slight bad ass feeling that I get when the whole shop watches me get something done and sort of cringes at the sight. It's weird but cool.
I still want my septum pierced but for now I am happy with my transverse lobes. They are also very quiet piercings. Not many people notice that the rings are going entirely through my ear. My parents didn't notice at all. It's like having a fun little secret. I point it out to some people and they are always amazed at it and even more amazed that they didn't notice.
Every once in a while someone will ask me "Do those go through your ear?" and I happily answer " Well, yeah."
