When one of my friends decided she was going to have her nose pierced, two other friends and I decided to go out with her and make a day of it, so the four of us all went together to get our new piercings done. Only two of us had ever been pierced before, and I was not one of them. I have wanted an industrial piercing for about two and a half years now, since I was a freshman in college, and I decided I was finally going to do it. We live in New York, in Queens specifically, and we went to a place called True Blue Tattoo, in Middle Village. If you live in New York I highly recommend it. There is also a small partner store, a jewelry and clothing shop called Sideshow, next door. Everything in True Blue was very clean, and the people were very nice. We picked that studio because one of us had already been pierced there twice, and so we knew it would be clean, safe, and affordable. My industrial was only $30!

Since this was my first piercing other than my two "normal" sets of holes in my earlobes, there was some concern that I might go into shock on the part of my three cohorts. I, however, was not worried. We watched our piercer, Vinny, who happened to be the owner of the studio, take everything from sterile autoclave packages, and basically be obsessive about cleanliness in every way. He went through almost half a box of gloves to pierce the four of us. He even changed gloves after picking up his glasses to put them on!

I went second, and when it was my turn, I sat in the chair, and my friends were all watching. First he examined my ears to make sure I had enough cartilage to hold the piercing. He said that they were a little bit shallow but that it should still be fine for me to get it done. He began by measuring my ear so he could choose the correct bar length, so that it wouldn't be too tight while my ear was inflamed and healing. Then he looked at the angle of my ear and where the cartilage was thick enough to hold the bar, and placed some dots on my ear so that he would know where he was aiming for. He didn't use a long needle that would go through both holes like the bar would, he just used a short needle and made two separate holes. He used the longer needle for my friend who was a little more squeamish, but not for me.

He started with the first hole, the one in the front, and pierced it with the needle. It didn't hurt nearly as much as I thought it would, and there wasn't a "POP" like some people say there is. It just feels like a release of resistance, which is what it is, I guess. Just as I was thinking that it wasn't so bad, and I didn't know what my friends were worried about, he put the bar through. The bar he was using was externally threaded, so that hurt quite a bit more! As soon as it was through it hurt a lot less, though. Then he did the back hole, first with the needle, and then put the bar through it. I was still fine, not in shock or anything.

Then he started looking at me funny. That made me nervous. I remembered what he had said about my cartilage, and I was afraid he was going to say that as it turned out, it was too thin for me to keep the piercing, and that it would reject if I tried. I would have been so upset! Instead he told me that the back hole was just at a weird angle and it was pushing my ear out and putting pressure on the piercing. My friend looked at it too, and she said it was putting pressure on my ear so it stuck out at a funny angle. He said that all he had to do was to move the back hole up a little bit. So he had to put another hole in my ear, just above the one it was in, take the bar OUT of the original hole and put it INTO the new one. It hurt a good bit, but I did NOT go into shock at all! In the words of one of my friends, it was "freaking hardcore, dude." Mine bled more than usual because of the extra hole, but it came out looking great, if I do say so myself. I'm so happy with my new piercing. This was my first real body mod, and I definitely can't wait to get more!
