Before this the only thing I've had pierced is my ear lobes and that was with a gun. I gauged them but then took those out cause I didn't like how they looked on me. But other than that there was nothing, no piercings, no tattoos, hell I was only 17 so that could explain it. Yeah so, I had been thinking about getting my tragus pierced for quite some time. Well, once I knew what it was. =) I had asked my mother to take me to get it done countless times. It had always been a no, much like wanting to get my navel pierced except I had grandma, yes GRANDMA backing me up on the navel one. Either way it looked like I was not going to get it done any time soon.
Anyways, I had asked if I could do it myself. She actually said yes, I was SO shocked. I grabbed a needle from the hospital (my mom works there and we have a few jus laying around, never used of course -- Not too safe I know.) and an ice cube. I was scared to death of the pain. I had often pinched my tragus to test the waters so to say, just to get a feel of how bad it would hurt. The ice cube actually kind of hurt a bit it was a weird feeling after I had iced it for about 30 minutes or so I finally got up enough nerve to grab the needle. I marked the place where I wanted it pierced and after getting it in position of where I wanted the piercing I stuck it through, well it wasn't all that easy. Took some pushing but I did not want to push it through too hard cause I was afraid of poking something else by accident (it was a lot harder than I thought) As I was pushing it though I could hear as it went further through, kind of nasty sounding. I finally finished it, I was so excited. Yes it bled a little but not so much, I went into the bathroom where I brought the alcohol to clean it fairly well. I ran down the stairs to show my mom. She totally flipped, like, "I can't believe you went n pierced it!" I reminded her that she gave me permission! Then it came, "Well, I didn't really think you'd go and put a hole in your body by yourself!" yeah, she thought wrong! If you want something bad enough I guess you'll do it yourself.
Well, about the after-care, I totally did nothing. I sort of forgot, I was just a little caught up in the moment.
Surprise! That's not the end. During the next week it was horrible.. I had accidentally slept on it one night. Made it become inflamed and infected. After I got it all taken care of it finally started to heal. After a week or two it was pretty much all the way healed but not before it got ripped out! Yes, RIPPED out. It was gross. I totally freaked out, couldn't believe I ripped it out, thought mom would never let me pierce it again. Well, I didn't tell her.
I let that heal cause I was so determined to get and keep this piercing, I had done it once so I can do it again basically. That was a drag, I hate waiting and waiting for it to heal all the way as so not to cause any more problems was even worse.
So probably about a month later I pierced it again, went a lot better since I had known what to expect. Although I thought I should have probably gone to a professional. If this one gets ripped out I'm sure I will next time. It has currently healed, I have an eyebrow ring in it now (16g) looks kind of cute. The hardest part is finding rings I like for it.
I wouldn't encourage anybody to pierce anything by themselves. You should always go to a professional. It may seem harmless but with this piercing I already knew the risks, I had heard you could lose your hearing if it's pierced in the wrong place. I was also very afraid of that as well. But now when I look back, I can honestly say I guess I'm glad I did it myself. I learned a few things. Also I now realize things aren't as bad as they seem. The pinching vs. actually piercing it wasn't so much like the same thing. Pinching it hurts worse. Sticking the needle through isn't THAT bad.
I love the piercing now, I've very glad I did it although I wish I didn't have to do it twice but it was well worth it. I love everybody's reactions to it. Like, the usual, "Wow, did that hurt." I can honestly say it really didn't hurt too badly.
That same night I also pierced my nose =) I don't think I did so bad. Photos below.
