I had just turned 14, I had yet to be stabbed by a needle. It was the start of the summer holidays, the holiday just before I moved up schools. I'd wanted some sort of piercing in my ear since I was 4/5 years old. When I was younger I bugged my mum a lot to let me have my lobes pierced, but she kept saying that I was to young and it wouldn't be acceptable for school, so I had to wait until I had finished year 9 and I was moving up. Over this time, I was set on getting my lobes pierced for about 5 years, for a while I forgot about getting my ears pierced. But then my sister started to get her helix's pierced, and I started to think that it looked pretty, so I drifted over to wanting my helix pierced many times. And I had decided that for my first two piercings I want a single helix on both of my ears. I talked to my friends about this, and they all tried to put me off getting any sort of piercing at all or at least only one helix. At this time, I used to be friends with people who shuddered at the idea of anything other than standard lobes being pierced. This still didn't put me off. It just made me more determined to get them.

So it came to the start of the holidays and I couldn't wait to get my ears pierced, my interest in piercings had grown, my sister had introduced me to BME as a place to find pictures of interesting piercings, and this made my curiosity for the piercing experience grow. I couldn't wait, so I got my mum to take to me the local piercing salon (Krazy Horse) in the village the first Monday. As I used to wake up really early in the morning, I woke up and the nerves and the excitement became stronger the closer it got to the time to get my ears pierced.

I wanted to leave as soon as I woke up, but no shops would be open at all by then, so I was made to wait till 11. My mum and I walked down to Krazy Horse. None of my friends would come with me as half of them had said they would disown me as a friend if I got all the mods I wanted to get. And they were all horrified at the idea. So I went with my mum.

When we arrived at the Krazy Horse, it was still closed, so we went for a walk around for 5 minutes or so and then we arrived back. And they were opened. I was impatient to go in. So we went in. Kurt knew my mum via my sister, she had been there for the majority of her piercings and they all turned out well, so I decided this was a good place to go. I told Kurt what I wanted done. My mum gave it the go ahead and went to sit on the waiting area around the corner, as she too hates the idea of needles going through your ear, except if it is on the lobes. I sat down in the chair and watched Kurt get the needles out and the jewellery ready.

I was getting more and more nervous, this was when I wished I had a friend who was into piercings so they could be there with me to take my mind of it. Kurt cleaned my ear, and marked out the placement for the two holes in my ears. I checked in the mirror to see if they were in the right place and that they were even. They were perfect, or so I thought. I sat back down again, Kurt put on his gloves and got the needle out ready. He asked me if I was ready, I nodded and gripped my trousers, I had been told by my sister that it didn't hurt at all for her, but for some people it did. So I was going through it in my head.

He put the needle to the first of my ears, and pushed it through, I felt a sudden sharp pain and my ear felt like it went hot. I heard the scissors cut the excess casing off and saw Kurt get the jewellery out of the tray. Then this didn't worry me, but thinking back, and going to different piercing studio, and seeing how they keep their jewellery clean, this didn't seem the most hygienic of things. But none the less, I didn't think about that then, all I was thinking about was getting the jewellery in. He then slid the ring in and fiddled around with it to put the ball on. This irritated my ear a little bit, but I didn't want to say anything. Then it was time for my other ear, the same thing happened, it all went smoothly and I was happy with the results, well, satisfied. I looked in the mirror straight after he'd done it. I was pleased, my ears were a little red, but I liked the way they looked with the rings in them. I went to show my mum, who shuddered and asked if it hurt, but then she said that they did look nice and handed the money over.

On the way home, I couldn't stop looking in shop windows, car mirrors, anything that I could admire my new holes in. When I got home, I examined them closer, and I saw that they weren't exactly equal on both sides, but I put this down to making my mum take to the studio at the early hours and then Kurt still being a bit sleepy.

I then cleaned them every night and morning with tea tree oil and cotton wool buds. I tried not to play with them too much, and didn't sleep on them. They were doing well, they kept going through stages of occasionally stinging more times than others. But I took care of them as I was told to and to this day I have been pleased with them. They started off my craze, if you wish to call it that, for piercings. And I would recommend them to people. As long as they made sure they looked after them correctly.
