I had wanted my daith piercing for about six months prior to getting it done. I wanted to get it done on a first impulse, but being the good girl that I am, I waited for the official permission from my dad. I was old enough to get it on my own, but I didn't want to cause all sorts of drama in the house over a much desired hole in my ear. So I waited and finally, after my dad realized that he wasn't going to change my mind on this piercing and since it's kind of tucked back into your ear anyway, he decided it was time to give me his blessing.

I had some concerns, as did my father, the main one being that I am slightly prone to fainting when I get piercings done. I haven't had that many, only two lobe piercings and my left cartilage, but after getting my seconds I almost passed out and the first time I changed my cartilage ring, I passed out cold. Plus I had heard it was incredibly painful. To calm some of the nerves, my friend who I play rugby with came along, as did of her good friends. We figured if anything happened, they could help carry me off to safety.
We got to Planet Ink in Ottawa and went over to talk to the guy at the desk. I had never personally been there for a piercing but had heard wonderful things from friends who had gotten several piercings, so that's where we went. Everyone in there seemed really nice and friendly. I told them I wanted to get my daith done and they couldn't see a problem with that. Then I mentioned my slight passing out issue. They didn't find that too concerning either. They just said that it was probably a lack of blood sugar or something and suggested that I have an orange juice or a Red Bull before I got the piercing done. I opted for the Red Bull. Once I had finished that, Rob, the guy who ended up doing my piercing, came and got me.
We went into a room towards the back of the parlor and it looked really cozy and clean. I hopped up on the bed and waited for the next instructions. Rob marked my ear and asked me if I thought that felt right. I agreed. At this point, I was extremely nervous. All the stuff I had heard about it being extremely painful was all I could think of. That and what I had heard of needle they use to do it. Needless to say, I was kind of freaking out.
Rob had me lie down on the bed and turn my head to my right ear was facing him. I refused to look at the needle and instead only stared into the faces of my friends. I can't say this was any help. One of their faces had turned white at the sight of the needle and her mouth kind of dropped a bit. This did not help calm my nerves. I started trying to tell her to stop making that face, but struggled to get my words out. I kept messing up their names as my nerves came bubbling out. My friend who had had several other piercings started acting as a Lamaze coach. She was having me breathe and keep breathing.
As she and I worked on my breathing and keeping calm, Rob started the piercing. I was surprised it didn't hurt as much as I thought it was going to. I just kept breathing and found that it was more pressure than pain that was inflicted on my ear. The piercing itself seemed to last quite a while, when in reality it was probably about two or three minutes. The most painful part was after the piercing had been done and the ring was in. It was a struggle to get the ball in my earring and he had to force it in a bit. Other than that the pain was mild.
Before I knew it, my piercing was done and Rob was sitting me up and handing me a mirror. It was so beautiful! I fell in love instantly. Rob thought it was really nice too. In fact, he had me wait a few moments and brought out the digital camera to take some pictures to add to his portfolio on the website. He went through the standard cleaning procedures, which didn't sound too complicated. I thanked him and we headed out.
As we stepped into the cold, Canadian winter air, my piercing started to sting a bit, but I figured it was normal. It healed really well. I got one keloid about two months after getting my piercing done. I used Aspirin on it, a solution which many friends recommended, and it went away in about two weeks.
I got home and my step-mom loved it. She thought it was just as nice as I did and insisted on take a couple pictures. She even considered getting one herself. My dad wasn't as keen to see it. But he warmed up eventually. My mom, on the other hand, just finds it weird. Oh well. You can't please everyone.
I had to take my ring out for rugby season and was rather worried about that. We weren't allowed any piercings at all on the field, but I really didn't want to lose my daith piercing because I loved it so much. I ended up putting a bar in it and it worked nicely. If you didn't know it was there, you had no idea it existed.
After rugby was done, I was unable to get the ring back in myself, so I went back downtown and the guys at Planet Ink fixed it up in a matter of seconds. They are awesome there. I have been very pleased everything I've seen in there.
Today, my daith piercing is sitting nicely and beautifully in my ear. I must say, it was definitely the perfect piercing for me.
