So, yesterday I rather randomly decided to get a daith piercing. This is not at all my usual approach to a piercing at all. I don't like pain. Well....only when its mixed with a big dose of pleasure as well. So normally, I research the piercing I'm thinking about, so I can make sure it I am not going to freak too much. Turns out its a good thing, I didn't read about it first because I never would have gone through with it. This definitely ranks as my most painful piercing to date.

I left the kids with the sitter and headed downtown to a tattoo/piercing shop (Amazing Grace) that I walk by on my way to work each day. They have a dog there who sleeps in the front of the shop each morning as I walk by. I didn't have time or patience to go to my usual shop, so I decided to give this place a try. I walked inside and asked the cost. It was a go. The piercer asked me about placement of the daith and showed me some pictures of possibilities. It turned out that we were looking at BME photos which I recognized immediately. Early this week, I had seen a set of piercings labeled concentric daith. This is the look I am aiming for, so he chose placement based on that.

While he cleaned the jewelry, I checked out his portfolio of tattoos. Lots of talent there. This place could be potential for future tattoos as well. He got everything together while I pet the doggie I had been admiring through the window for weeks. I always get nervous before a piercing, so it was hard to wait. Thankfully, I had no idea what was coming. I have had my fair share of piercings over the years, but I have got to say that so far this one ranks as the most painful I have ever had. It was by no means unbearable, but a whole lot more uncomfortable than I had anticipated.

He called me back and I sat down on the table. Looks like this was going to be it. We did the usual inhale/exhale pierce on the third time routine. Nothing unusual so far. 1, 2, 3 pierce and it stopped. The needle did not make the pass completely. It was stopped at about 2/3 of the way through. Remember, I don't like pain, so my head began to panic. Then I thought to myself that the best way to deal with any pain is to focus intently. Although I suspect I squirmed some as he finished, it immediately became bearable when I let go of some of need to control the pain/situation and let it just be. He got the needle through and put the jewelry in place. At that point, I could feel the blood tickling the inside of my ear. Funny, isn't it, that the trickling of blood down your skin is such a distinctive feeling that you know its there whether or not you can see it. This is the one and only piercing I have ever had that bled so actively. I knew it would likely continue to bleed for awhile yet. He cleaned it all up, gave me the usual instructions and sent me on my way.

When I woke this morning I found more blood dried around my piercing. It looked like someone got murdered inside my ear. I gave it a good cleaning and remembered why cartilage piercings suck so much. The dull ache had begun and where it would end I have no idea. Now its within the realm of a normal piercing. It lets me know its there which makes me happy. I suspect it will be a hard one to take care of well. Again because of its placement and difficulties I have had in past healing cartilage piercings. Its going to be so worth it when everything is nicely healed.

Its lovely and exactly what I wanted. I will place the inner daith as soon as it seems feasible. I am glad I decided on just one for the time being. I just should have thought through the pain factor before I went ahead. Its in an awkward and very small place and it is cartilage after all. I really should have expected the experience I got. When I checked out the bme stories this morning and found many similar experiences, so I was glad to know that all was normal. The pain and the blood were to be expected. Good thing is that I can sleep on the side of my head that the daith was placed , so no using my piercing pillow to help me sleep. When I told my Porkchop about it and all he said was: "tell me where he made it hurt." (sicko!) Gotta love him though.
