I 'd never really wanted to pierce anything on my ears other than my lobes. I'd had my eyebrow and navel pierced, and my lobes had been pierced twice. Oh, and once when I was thirteen I had to be cool and have a helix. But I took out that and my eyebrow long before I decided it was time for a new piercing.

Now I'm not what you'd call the piercing type. I'm kind of a hipster, I listen to the Hives, I go to college, and I eat my vegetables. But I liked piercings, and so when New Breed had their piercings for free and I'd only have to pay for the jewelry, I decided to go. This is my first piercing since I moved away from home, so I wasn't sure if the place would be great. I called ahead and came in with my roommate, just to talk to the guys and see what was going on. I knew of New Breed because they have a lot of locations around Indiana. There were three in Indy alone, and although I live closest to the one on the south side, to be safe I went to the one on the west. It was still in a pretty bad part of town, and it was around nine at night. It took me forever to find the place, but when I did, it looked like your average tattoo parlor. The place smelled like antiseptic the moment I walked in, since it was late there were just two guys working, both of whom were very nice. I asked about the piercing, and one said he'd feel really comfortable doing it. He went and got paper work while my roommate and I wandered around, looking at the tattoos that had been done there. Next we discussed where I wanted my piercing exactly on my ear.. I had wanted more of a snug, after looking at my own ears and pictures, but I wanted it right past my anti-tragus to the right, up higher on my ear, where it dips in. He said he'd rather it be on the very very end of my anti-tragus, because the fold was so thin where I wanted it. I agreed, thinking it would look fine either way.

He got my ID and we got set up. My roommate and I talked while he got ready and then the piercer and I discussed what gauge I wanted the hoop to be. We decided on an 18 gauge, something I'm very happy with. So I settled in on my back and he cleaned up my ears very well, and explained the procedure, and so on. It was very similar to my eyebrow piercing, in the way he slid in the needle and the way I was laying. I was so nervous before I had it done! I hate pain. So when he pierced me I was frightened, but its over so quickly you don't have time for it to hurt. But it does, just a little then and then now, about to hours later. More on that in a bit.

He put the needle up to the place on my tragus that he marked, and I had approved. It was actually really super close to where I had wanted it done to begin with, so I was excited. He positioned the needle a few times, and then told me to take a deep breath, so on and so forth. The pain was more of a sharp pressure than an all out pain. It only last a second, then he paused. Then he moved the needle in more so he could get the jewelry. This was the most painful part of the procedure. I joked that he could just leave the needle, and I would be such a bad ass. He said no.

He put in the CBR and cleaned up the blood, which I expected. I bleed often when I'm stuck with needles. It took him just a little bit to get the bead on the ring, since it was so small. He then explained how he wanted me to clean it, which was carefully to avoid an ear infection. I already had provone soap, so I was set. I then paid and left.

It's only been done maybe two hours, and it still kind of aches. But that's to be expected. I took some Advil- no aspirin! It thins the blood and you'll continue bleeding! - and since then the pain has gone down, but it's slightly puffy. I'm not worried about it getting infected or any serious problems. Overall, this was a great piercing to get because it looks good, it's not overly noticeable, and pain was a minimum. And in the end I only paid fifteen dollars for a really good piercing! It was so worth it.
