So – there I was at a 2 gauge and a 4 gauge ear lobe piercing on each side. And to tell the truth – going to 0 is really hard. So, one day, my boyfriend, a piercer in my town, decided that we could just scalpel them instead. Just a cut in between, he said, would open my lobes to gauges I wasn't even considering before. But I was a wuss enough that I didn't want to do it at the shop where everyone could see me cry, so we waited, and took it home.

I can't even tell you how bad an idea that was. So, there we are at the house, in the bathroom, trying to figure out what to use on my ears. Against my boyfriend's advice, I told him to just use a pair if sharp scissors. I didn't want to wait, since I knew I'd never convince myself to try again if we waited for the right equipment. That was a really bad idea.

So, there we were, in my bathroom, using our hands to hold my ear apart enough to fit the scissors in through the two piercing holes. And then the fun begins.

I can not tell you how bad it hurt, since I don't really remember. All I know is that there was a lot of blood, tears, and pain enough that I blocked out the memory. And the sounds - there is no way to describe them. The ripping you hear when you pierce something is nothing compared to the sound of cutting flesh. Until I dermal punched my inner conch, it was the most painful thing to ever happen to me. But that is another experience.

And that wasn't all, boys and girls. Then we had to fit in the jewelry. But since this was a different procedure than usual, we didn't know how large my ear would turn out to be. We had several sizes, but what ended up fitting was a ½" plug. They were glass ones that originally were my boyfriends, but I didn't care. All I wanted was to quit cutting at my ear. We had trimmed off a lot of flesh to make a bigger size (I think it was 9/16") fit in, but it didn't happen. So this ear was a little larger in hole size than the jewelry – and we all know what that means. There was a lot of blood. The pictures (which are posted) look pretty awesome, but at the time, all I could think was that it was a good thing that blood doesn't make me sick. I can just imagine how bad THAT would've been.

And there we are. My one ear is nice and gauged out, larger than I had ever thought I'd go. And the other ear was only two holes, little and tiny. I almost didn't go on – but my man wouldn't let that happen. I wanted to kill him then, but now I am so glad. If I had had my way and we had stopped, my ears would still be lop-sided.

After the "fun" of the first ear, I let my boyfriend tell me how we should have done it. I can admit, I was wrong making him use scissors. The second time around, while certainly painful, was not NEARLY as bad. I know some of it was endorphins (since they work so well) but using a straight-edged blade was much better. It helped that it was probably sharper, too.

So – no more cutting sound, about the same amount of blood, and a better idea of how my ear would be when we were done. The hole this time was a lot smaller than ½" but the trimming of my ear wasn't so bad. It also fixed the amount of crookedness I had had from stretching out my ears. I had started with two "gun" piercings from when I was little, and one was crooked. The new hole was straight – and that's so much better.

So, blood everywhere, but I had two new holes in my ears. And they were so pretty. Now I was crying as much from the pain as the fact that I liked them so much.

Clean-up was fun, at least for me. I sat and drank a bottle of Sunny D while he cleaned the mess. And we posed and took pictures – which I think are very sexy, by the way. You should get a membership if you don't have one and look.

The best part of the experience was the fast healing time. They closed up and quit hurting in about and hour, and three days later, I changed to jewelry I liked. I stretched them twice now, to get to 5/8" and I am so happy. I am not going any higher – this is where I want to be.

Another plus for me is that my lobes are still nice and thin. Since I'm not stretching, I don't have to worry about it, and any jewelry of any thickness will fit in my ears. I don't have any blowout and my scars from the "gun" piercing are almost gone, so I didn't have to rip them to stretch when I did, and it was so much less painful.

All in all, this was a bad way to do it, but I am so glad I did. If you are stuck at a gauge, I'd suggest scalpelling your ears to the size you want. The pain is definitely worth it, and you'll only have to do it once. And if you keep stretching, it's easier and less painful. Just go to a shop that knows what to do, even if you can just take your man home. It's always a better idea to do it that way.
