If any of you are like (I'm sure there are plenty of us), then you may understand what I mean when I say I was "craving" a piercing last week. In the past I've had several piercings done such as my tongue web, monroe, horizontal eyebrow, and rook just to name a few. Daith piercings have always been appealing to me, but whenever I thought about getting one myself, I would compare it in my mind to what my rook had felt like during the procedure and the six months following that it took to heal. I decided to go for it, and I'm sure glad I did.

My boyfriend had just moved and so we were driving around to check out the various, and unfortunately often very tacky and unsanitary, tattoo shops around the new area. I literally walked into one place that had allowed in a bulldog that walked around the shop as his owner got tattooed. I've heard the name "Abstract Art Tattoo" a few times, and only good reviews, so when I saw the sign I pulled in.

Everyone was friendly and the place was certainly clean, but when I asked for a daith piercing the artists simply shrugged. I became weary until I noticed the man I was speaking with actually had each of his pierced and so I pointed to his ears for clarification. "Oh, is that what it's called? Yep, I can do that for ya". Though I was a little hesitant I followed him back the piercing room and he wiped down the room and chair for me. I decided if I didn't like what I saw from him after this I would simply walk out. Luckily, he seemed to know just what to do for the procedure and I told myself to overlook the name thing. He noticed my other 16 piercings and said I probably didn't need a complete explanation of the piercing procedure but he would give me the condensed version to which I agreed.

New jewelry was removed from the packaging and set aside, and a new needle was opened. He dropped that first needle, but I made sure to watch as he picked it up and disposed of it, and opened a new one for me. I sighed a breath of relief. He began to bend the needle and this comforted me since I had read that it should indeed be bent for this piercing. Next, he cleaned my ear and had me hold back my hair with my left arm (the piercing would be done on my right ear), so I was in a strange position (but it worked just fine). In one quick shove, the needle was through. I had anticipated a little more effort in this tight space, as my rook took two shoves to get through. I think the most tedious part of the procedure came not during the initial stab of the needle, but following the entire length of the needle through as well as the jewelry. The pain was surprisingly minimal, then again pain is not a big factor to me much of the time. Jewelry in, and a satisfied smile on my face, I handed my piercer a $10 tip for his great work and was on my way after a cigarette and some chatting with the workers. The big guys were especially surprised at little me going through with this and enjoying it. They admitted that when I walked in they thought I would ask for a "belly button ring"

That day I felt like I had a lot of pressure on that side of my head, but some Ibuprofen was enough to take care of it. It was a dull pain similar to a slight inner ear infection. I clean it with some Provon antimicrobial soap in the shower and there's no need to mess with it much throughout the day. I basically leave it alone because that seems to work best for me.

Since that day I have not even sensed the piercing, unless of course, someone points it out to me. It is nearly impossible to bump or irritate simply because of the placement, and I had been worried about sleeping on my right side where it is pierced, but I can sleep on it just fine. This piercing is healing quite well and it's awesome because it's not one that I have to baby.

If you've ever thought about a daith piercing, don't think about it any longer! Act on it because it's pretty discrete (my boss doesn't mind it), fun, and I've found that it's pretty easy to care for. I'm finally content with my ear project, my daith compliments my tragus to conch industrial nicely as the ring orbits the bar. Have fun with your piercings!
