First, I want to say that Mother's Tattoo and Piercing is the best piercing shop in the greater Cincinnati area. They are located at 617 Main Street in Covington, KY. Their number is 859-261-8111. The shop is immaculately clean at all times and the staff is awesome. My favourite piercer's name is Chelsie. She's one of the sweetest people I've ever met and she's an awesome piercer. There is another piercer who works at Mother's named Tony, and my friends have been pierced by him. There's no other shop I'd let my friends (or their parents) go to.

My rook is one of my favourite piercings, mostly because I am never aware of it. Since the first day it's been pierced, I've been able to sleep on that side, wash and brush my hair without pain, etc. This is only important to me because it was not so with my "industrial" piercing which caused me a lot of pain and anxiety (this is experience is also on BME).

The decision to get my rook pierced was actually quite last minute. I knew I wanted something on my left ear, and I had three piercings in mind. My favourite cartilage piercing is the daith, but my anatomy doesn't suit it. I also liked the look of a snug, but sadly, I wasn't suited for that either, as it turns out.

I went down to the shop unaware as to what piercing I was going to get. I had Chelsie examine my ear to tell me which piercing I was most suited for. It turned out to be the rook. Apparently my rook is well defined, which means I can support two piercings in it. When I get enough money, I'll be getting the second one.

Once we determined I'd be getting the rook, Chelsie gave us the forms to fill out. She didn't need to check my i.d. because it was on file. I filled out the forms and chose the ball to the captive bead ring that would serve as the initial jewelry. After Chelsie had set up the room and allowed the jewelry to soak, she called us back.

My dad didn't go back with me because he doesn't like to watch me get pierced. It was just me, my boyfriend, and Chelsie. She ran through the sterilization and aftercare speech, which I pretty much know by heart (it's always nice to hear again it though). Then she had me sit on the table and she cleaned and marked my ear. She marked it a bit deeper than she normally would, to allow room for the second rook piercing. She had me look at the marks, but honestly I didn't really care. I trust Chelsie and I know she knows what she's doing.

Then I sat on the table again and she lined up the needle and the receiving tube. She gave me a play by play of what she was doing, which is comforting. She told me she wouldn't sneak up on me, as she lined up the needle and told me when I was ready, to take a deep breath in, and exhale. I did, and as I started to exhale, she pierced my rook. It wasn't painful; it just felt like a lot of pressure. She then inserted the jewelry and popped in the bead.

When she was done, I stood up and looked at it. I really liked it a lot. I didn't expect to like it much, because it was my third choice for a piercing. It looked right though. I liked how you couldn't really see the actually entry and exit holes because they were hidden by the flap of my helix.

After I looked at it, we went up front to pay. I got an aftercare form, and sea salt, tipped Chelsie, and was on my way. My dad surprisingly didn't hate it. He just asked James if I bled all over the place. From all of my piercings done by Chelsie, none of them have bled more than a drop. I attribute this to her, because my "industrial" bled like a bitch from the first hole that was pierced. James didn't really seem to have an opinion on it. That's just as well, because if he doesn't like it, I really don't care.

I was a little nervous about my next few days, because when I had my "industrial" pierced, I would start bleeding every time my heart rate went up for the next two weeks. I was delighted the next morning to not wake up with a blood stained face, ear, or pillow. There was minimal discomfort due to swelling, but I really only felt it if I pushed on the back of my ear.

The piercing healed quickly, despite a tiny bit of scar tissue forming on it (which I got rid of using vitamin e oil). To heal it, I used the same method I always use which is to not use soap, only salt soaks, and to keep my hands off it. It's very discreet, being only 18 gauge, and I don't think most people notice it unless I point it out to them. Even my dad forgot about it.

All in all it was another great experience with Chelsie and I can't wait to go back to get my second rook pierced. It's been about four months, no problems. If you want this piercing, of course you should get it, and if you're in Northern Kentucky or Southern Ohio, you should come to Mother's Tattoo and Piercing at 617 Main Street in Covington, KY.
