I was in Barrie last year (August, 2003) for Warped Tour. A bunch of friends and I went camping for the weekend, and on the day before the event, two of my friends decided to go to a little tattoo shop to get identical stars on their hip bone. While in there, I realized they did piercings, as well. The piercer convinced me to get a piercing done. The price there was way cheaper than any other place in my hometown of Oshawa - it was only thirty five dollars. I knew I was going to get an ear piercing, but I wasn't sure whether I wanted a daith or a rook. I eventually decided upon the daith, as I didn't know anyone who had one. I told him that I wanted the daith, which he mistook for a conch. I had to point out where the daith actually was, because he didn't believe that it was where I said it was.

After he realized what I wanted pierced, I sat down in the chair after my friends got their tattoos. The guy was prepped me about what he was going to do. I watched everything he did, which included the taking of the instruments out of the packages and setting them up on a cart, stuff like that. (I'm sorry I'm not more descriptive, this is the piercing that I don't remember a lot about due to its spontaneity.)

The piercing was about to start. The piercer had me tilt my head to the side. He had a difficult time positioning the needle in my ear because at that time, I had an industrial (which I got done in April, and this was August). The industrial was infected and extremely painful, so no matter what way he tried putting the needle, he was pushing against my industrial. I ended up letting out a cry of pain. I was covered in a cold sweat and I was gripping the arm rests of the chair so strongly my fingers were sore.

This went on for the longest time - the piercer trying to align the needle, the needle pressing against my infected industrial, me crying out in pain, the piercer apologizing, then it repeated itself. Finally, he just took a deep breath and rammed the needle through.

I have never sworn so much in my entire life when I got this done. I kid you not. When I got my industrial, I swore a fair bit afterwards because of the pain, but when I got this piercing, I wanted to start bawling my eyes out and just scream obscenities. I didn't cry, but I was screaming. I laugh with embarrassment when I think about it now. My friends laughed at me and left the room. I was in so much pain - pain from the pressure being put on my industrial, pain from the new piercing.

As if the pain wasn't enough, I lost all hearing in my left ear (the ear that I got pierced). I was terrified. I had read that there are a lot of nerves in that area of the ear and if a piercer accidentally pierced it the wrong way, you could go deaf. Well, I couldn't hear. Everything sounded like i was underwater. I was so scared. I said that to the piercer, and he told me not to move. I didn't listen to him, and I straightened my neck.

Big mistake.

As soon as I did that, I could hear again, but something warm and wet was trickling down the side of my face. Just as I touched it and looked at my fingers, the piercer told me it was blood. I was freaking out. I had never bled that much for any of my piercings, and here my ear was filled with blood and running down my face.

I ended up feeling really faint and needing to sit down and have some sugar, which is what I did - I went next door and got an orange juice and just hung around the piercing parlour afterwards with my friends. The piercer was so nice to me; he kept apologizing and calling me sweetie. Despite his lack of knowledge for piercing positioning, he was a really cool guy who was really sweet and didn't want to hurt me.

I had one minor problem with my daith during the healing process. It just got a little bump on it, but after some cleaning and medicated cream that I got from my doctor, it was good to go.

It is my favourite piercing to date. The pain was well worth it. I would consider going through it again for my other ear.

The place where I got the piercing in Barrie is now closed, so I have no idea where the piercer is or what he's doing. One of the guys there apparently went missing or something crazy like that.

If you have any questions about this piercing, feel free to email me.
