My best friends birthday was quickly approaching and I had no idea what to get her, because she is one of those people who have everything already. What do you get someone who has everything? Then it clicked, a matching piercing.
I had always been in love with tattoos and piercings, and I always loved getting new ones. The feeling of the adrenaline rushing through your body is always worth the pain of the piercing.
On the morning of Ashley's birthday, I went over and woke her up. I wished her a happy birthday and told her that we were going to get something new done. She really had no idea what I was talking about, which I was happy about anyway. I really wanted it to be a surprise. I drove us down to Ritual Tattoo and Body Piercing Studio in downtown Kelowna BC. This is the place that I have gotten all my tattoos and piercings, and I would not have taken her anywhere else. We got out and started walking up the stairs.
When we got into the building, Joel greeted us. Having gone to him so many times before, he knew me by name and was happy to see me. We went in and explained that is was Ashley's birthday, and that I wanted us to get matching piercings. Joel and Ashley both thought that it was a really good idea and we talked about what would be the best to get done. I had always wanted to get my rook pierced but I didn't know how it would look. Joel looked at both of our ears and we decided that it would look really good on both of us.
Joel happened to have some free time when we had gone in, so we ended up getting it done right then. Ashley went first, since she was the birthday girl. She hopped up into the chair and looked at me. Ashley was not a huge fan of piercings, and didn't have many at all. Joel got all his supplies out and marked her ear. He then asked if she wanted a barbell or a ring. I had never thought about what I wanted, because I didn't think that we would be given the choice. While Ashley thought about it, I decided in my mind that I really wanted a barbell, because I had a barbell in my inner conch on my right side. That way they would match.
Ashley decided on a ring, so Joel took out the different gages and sizes and let her pick what she wanted. She picked a small ring with a green ball. It was really cute. Then Joel said that he was just doing a dry run to get the feel for her ear. He took out a tunnel and what looked like a q-tip with no cotton on it. He went through all the motions, and it looked like it would be no problem.
Joel grabbed out the tunnel that he was going to use, and took the needle out of the protective wrap. "Are you ready to go???" Joel asked Ashley. She looked over at me, and said "only if amber can hold my hand." I came over and I stood on the opposite side and watched Joel do his work. It looked like it went through really easily when he was putting the needle through, but then came the ring. With the way Ashley's ear is shaped, he had to put a lot of pressure on it to bend the needle out the right way so it didn't stab her accidentally. Once the ring was through, he made it smaller with a pair of pliers, and out the bead on.
She was done. Ashley stood up and looked at it. It was all red, and there was a little blood, but it looked awesome. I couldn't wait to get mine. I was really anxious while I was listening to Joel tell Ashley about the aftercare of her new piercing. And finally, it was my turn.
I sat down in the chair and my heart was pounding. I told Joel that I wanted the barbell and I wanted it on my left side. Joel went through all the same preliminary steps, and I could feel my hands slowly getting sweatier. Finally he was ready to go. As he put the tunnel to my ear, and brought the needle up, all my worries went away, and I was excited. I had wanted this for so long and now I was finally getting it. I had no idea of the incredible pressure that needed to be applied to get the barbell through. Putting the jewelry into my ear was the most painful part. Once it was done, he put the ball onto the end and I was done. He cleaned it and gave me an aftercare sheet.
When I looked in the mirror at my new piercing, I knew that it was perfect. It was in the perfect spot in my ear, and it looked so good. I will never forget how much fun I had taking Ashley to get this done, and Ashley will never forget what she got for her birthday that year.
