I come from a very conservative family so just getting a lobe piercing took a lot of persuasion. I was seven years old when I first had my ears pierced but I have always wanted more and considering I lived with my parents, I was forced to abide by their rules.

However, my teenage years arrived and my journey to get my second lobe piercing began when I hit fifteen years old. I could not wait any longer – I needed something pierced! And, what did my mum say when I asked? ....a definite NO. Many months passed but eventually, my constant pleading, begging and damn right annoying nagging paid off; my rents had grown extremely bored of me talking about earrings and agreed that I could have one of my ear lobes pierced twice. Naturally, I promised that I would never want another piercing and straight away, off I popped down to my local hairdressers that had been recommended to me by a friend.

A lobe piercing does not seem like a big deal in comparison to other types of piercings you can pay for these days but regardless, you still need to feel relaxed and confident in your piercer. I definitely didn't. The salon was very posh, and they were shocked at me only wanting one ear pierced. It was only my lobes man! Furthermore, the lady who did it was an ancient creature, who I swear had no idea about what to do. She used a gun and shook a lot, which not only caused a lot of pain but missed the marked spot entirely. But, after all of the trauma I had my piercing and for a while, I was satisfied.

Around three months later, I was told that "apparently" I had my piercing on the wrong ear – on the 'gay' side – I didn't even know there was a correct ear to be pierced on???!!!! I was already longing for another piercing anyway, so decided to get my ears balanced out.

I didn't bother asking my parents and this time, I went to 'The Piercing Shop'. A lot of my friends had been pierced here, so I knew that I was in good hands. This was a far better experience; the people were really chilled and relaxed me totally. They all had plenty of piercings themselves so I trusted that I could rely upon them. It was here that I found out that my ears had been pierced lopsided (trust me eh – I didn't even notice!).

I got pierced in a separate room (not in the middle of a busy salon), she used a spray too that completely numbed my ear. No weird looks were given and we just chatted about lots of stuff to calm me down (I'm a wimp when it comes to this kind of thing). The lady even got out a ruler to measure the distance and ensure that my piercings would be pierced evenly this time. She used a sterlized needle too and talked through everything that she was going to do. Then it came down to it but I didn't feel nervous at all. It was a totally painless procedure and it looked great! They even gave me another pair of earrings that I should have paid for because of my lopsided holes!!

My mum and dad also had to admit that they liked the peircings!

The great thing about having my lobes pierced is that they appeared a lot less radical than a cartilage piercing or surface piercing. In reality, you can do so much with them though; I am probably going to stretch them eventually and maybe even try out orbitals eventually. But, for now, simple earrings do the trick! If you are the type of person who worries a lot about whether or not you will regret having parts of your body pierced when you get older then I strongly recommend lobe piercings – they do not hurt at all, aren't offensive in appearance and I happen to think look very pretty set up with studs and dangly earrings on a night out!! * smile *

Furthermore, luckily for me and my piercing addiction, the second lobe hole has also forced my parents to become a lot more relaxed when it comes to body modification. They have agreed that I am allowed a third flesh piercing and my belly button done too. However, my stomach is not quite as flat as I would like it to be yet so I am getting my helix pierced tomorrow (I will add the experience when I have gone through with it) and some time in the future will pay for my snug to be pierced too! Getting my tongue pierced is perhaps pushing my parents good nature a little too far...that will have to wait till uni!!!
