I had been thinking of body piercing for along time, since people I knew had previously gotten their navels, eyebrows, lips, tongues, and lips done. I never really, truly thought of myself as the type to get a piercing done, though. I had never had any type of piercing, even normal lobes. But one day I suddenly got this incredible desire to have plugs.

I saw many people around me with them, some with very stretched piercings. I wasn't a huge fan of huge ones, at least for myself. I know that I would not look very good with them. But I was in love with smaller ones, like about 2g, I would say. I wasn't exactly sure what all the sizes looked like at the time, though. But, piercing was not the first priority at the time, so it got shelved. I would still always notice people who had them, though.

One of my friends had normal ear piercings that she had stretched by putting 2 earrings in at a time, and now could fit small plugs in the holes. Because I had such little experience with them, I truly didn't even know what size I had to start at, and thought maybe I would have to get tiny piercings and work up slowly. I really did not want to do that, because while I thought plugs were awesome, I do not really like or envision myself with tiny earrings.

The aspect of pain also made me second-guess myself. I have come to admit that I have a rather low threshold for pain, and having no previous experience with piercing, I had no idea what to expect when the needle went through my ear. I knew that I could deal with it, but it still made me think, and worry.

Finally, the day came when I said, "No more putting it off, I am getting plugs." I decided to go up to Providence with my friends to Evolution. That is a well-known and respected studio throughout Rhode Island. I had looked at their website before, and my friend had just gotten her nipples done there a few weeks before. I knew that they were clean and safe. We planned to go up the following Saturday night, as we were all free then.

That whole week, I kept going back and forth, one minute thinking that they would be the coolest thing ever, the next worrying that they would hurt a lot then look horrible anyway.

Saturday came, and we drove up to Providence, found some parking somehow, and walked to the studio. As I walked in, there was one woman ahead of me getting her tongue done, and her calmness helped reassure me. I looked around at all the cases and cases of jewelry that they have. The plugs and other lobe-type things were in one case, and I fell in love with like all of them. The coolest ones were these wooden ones made of dark wood with a lighter wood star in the center. I also loved the acrylic plugs with the black o-rings to hold them in. I went up to the counter, and the guy there was very helpful. He answered all my questions to my satisfaction. I was worried about stretching my lobes, and about going to far, because I had heard that once you go to big, they will not heal anymore, and I was terrified of having holes that I might not want later in life. He said that he used to have 0g plugs, and showed me where they used to be. You could hardly see the mark from where the y had healed. This eased my worry, because I knew I probably would never go as big as 0g (or would I)? I decided on 8g hollow tubes with o-rings. I thought they looked really cool, a little small, but I was way to much of a wimp to get pierced at a larger gauge. They said they would pierce a 4g, but that looked positively huge when I was imagining the needle for it.

Finally, the woman was done getting her tongue done, I was all checked in, after reading all the care instructions, signing all the papers, and having my ID checked. They wanted to make sure I was fully informed about what I was doing. I felt positive I was. I had done my homework. Joe came out to greet me. He is such a nice guy, totally caring and into what he does. We went into the one of the piercing rooms, and as he began his prep, I chatted with him about his piercings and experiences. Everything was totally sterile and clean. He had me sit up as he marked my ears and let me look at the min the mirror to be sure I liked the placement. I was so nervous, I could barely think, but I knew the placement looked fine. I lay down on the table as he talked me through the entire process. He did the left ear first, and because I was so nervous, I tensed up, and it probably hurt more than it should have. He first pierced it at 10g, then quickly pulled a taper though to stretch it to 8g. He said this helps reduce the bleeding. The right ear went easier, as I was able to breathe deeper and relax more. I stood up and looked in the mirror, and fell in love with them. They are not real big, but you can tell they aren't normal earrings. The healing has gone pretty well, the left bled a lot on the second day, then clotted, and just recently I have been able to rotate them both easily with virtually no pain. Soon, I hope to stretch them, eventually going to 2g. I feel that is a good nice, not ridiculously large, but definitely noticeable on someone. I'd like to get wooden plugs then, also. I know it isn't as exciting as some of other mods, but I am very happy with my new lobes.
