Artist Jody - who else?
Studio Anatomic Adornments

Okay, Okay, so it's not a daith on the other side, but I ask you, what else could I do? A daith, much as I love the one on the left side, just would not be practical on the right side. A rook was the natural alternate choice, it allows me to wear my earbud when I am at work, and my left ear gets the headset for my phone. It also has the ability to be reasonably discreet, and it brings back the balance in the symmetry of my piercings, something that is important to me. Not many people have ever made any comment about my daith, so we'll see what happens with the rook.

Once the decision to do the daith was made a few months ago, Jody and I both knew that somewhere down the road, there would be something done on the right side, being a Libra, I like things to be balanced. I had just not planned on it being quite so soon, it was scheduled to be done later on in the spring. The scrotal ladder was finished last month and the project was scheduled to be continued in January so it left December as a month that I would not be pierced in. Fourteen consecutive months with at least one piercing in it and next year would see at least one per month as well, so I just couldn't have one month in there with nothing. The appointment was made for New Year's Eve. I had originally planned to just add a hafada piercing and continue filling in the rest of the scrotal sac but when Jody asked what we were doing, the rook just elbowed its way past the hafada and came out of my mouth first, so a rook it would be. As soon as I said that, Jody went into her p iercing room and began to do preparations to do the piercing, including using a neat looking set of pliers to bend the fourteen gauge needle that would be used into a suitable shape to do the piercing. She did have to do a stretch on a pair of lobes first so I went out for a smoke. A few minutes later, it was time, into the piercing room we went.

Now cartilage piercings are not my favourites, but one must do what needs to be done, I knew this one would be coming, that symmetry thing you remember. At least this time I had no chance to get nervous, besides, it was easier to get at than the daith so it shouldn't be too bad right? Teagan joined us to observe and listen as Jody explained in detail what and why she was doing things, she also explained what some of the possible complications could be during this particular piercing. Now it may sound strange having the piercer explain the problems that may occur while the client is in the room, as it might make the client nervous. Perhaps I should explain that Jody has pierced me over two dozen times, the comfort level is quite high when I get pierced and having an apprentice in the room is nothing new. I was also aware of the glove changes, the single use packets of lube and the fact that the needles, tools and the jewellery came from the freshly opened packages th at were used to autoclave them. I still notice these things but it is more subconscious now, it is the same routine every time Jody pierces me. Excellence is the normal standard at Anatomic Adornments and I appreciate it.

I know the piercing procedure quite well by now, my head is turned away from her and I can't see what she's doing so Jody just tells me when to take the deep breaths. It's time, I take the slow deep breaths, in through the nose and out through the mouth and Jody sends the fourteen gauge needle safely into the needle receiving tube(NRT), I definitely knew that the needle was in. I would like to say that I responded without flinching and without changing the rhythm of my breathing, however I can't, my left leg kicked, the left foot ended up crossing the right leg, I was immobile above the waist though and the breathing went back to normal once the sixteen gauge ring was in place. Though it is a piercing that one tends to notice, I found it was easier than the daith. Another successful episode in my journey into body jodification is completed, Jody has done her part, healing is my job. Basically for the ear piercings that I have had, the LITHA (leave it the hell alone) met hod works for me, once the blood is cleaned from it the next day, all I do is to clean away the crusties with fortified castile soap once or twice a day as needed. If there are any problems, I can IM, email, phone or stop in at the shop for help, their version of aftercare is more than just the castile soaps and sea salts that they have available, another big plus in my books.

It is now the day after, there was no noticeable bleeding and it is only tender behind the ear itself. I go to sleep on my right side, it took awhile to figure out the most comfortable way to support my head without placing any stress on my youngest. It is showing every intention to behave like all the rest of my piercings and I expect that to continue. One thing that never fails to amaze me, I'm in my mid forties, I do every thing "wrong" according to the medical system (smoke, bad diet, no exercise program, desk job) and seem to have no problem healing. Maybe I should bear in mind that the healing mode has been the norm for me for over the past year and will be for the foreseeable future.

When in Vancouver and you want a great piercing experience, get yourself down to Anatomic, tell them I sent you, you'll be treated right! Mind you, you'd be treated right even if you didn't tell them that. If you have any questions or comments that you would like to direct to me, please contact me, always willing to talk piercing.
