May 5, 2000: Thank you to everyone who entered. Below are the winners and semi-finalists. Again, thank you to those that entered, many of your reasons are some of the most significant things written to BME. I wish that I could make it happen for everybody.

MirrorGuy1 "This is a carving from a Mayan temple of a lower level god. As a child, I was abandoned by my mother when I was 6. My dad gave the responsibility of raising me to my grandparents who treated me like the boy in the bubble. I've never had a chance to learn what's out there in the world until a couple of years ago. One thing I was able to find out was that a small side of my family tree on my mom's side went back to the Mayan. This is one of the few sides of my family I have, and one of the only ones I can be proud to belong to. Of the two brandings I've had so far, my second gave me a new respect for my body, and helped me cope with my father's cancer." |

FTSHBOY "I have studied and tried to emulate the earth-centered, spiritually grounded ways of American Indian cultures, among them the Kwakiutl (from which this image stems), Inuit, and other northern groups. It is a whale in an egg, representing spiritual rebirth and whale-human kinship as well as being a stylistic symbol of a culturally revered and respected creature." |

Chris "The reason I would like to have a branding is not only for aesthetic reasons, but because I have read many experiences of people getting brandings and would like to experience it for myself. I think it would be a very spiritual experience. I have always been fascinated by other cultures and their rites of passage. I truly believe that as part of the western culture, we are missing out on an important step in life by not having our own rites of passage." |

SEMI-FINALISTS: (in no particular order) | |||
![]() Rebekah A reworking of her BME Logo tattoo as a brand |
![]() Brien "It would go across my stomach so about a foot wide and maybe 6 inches high, possibly larger. Also I like the tribal grafitti logo because it's so wonderfully abstract that not very many people will be able to tell what it is on first glance and will have to look closer in order to figure it out, especially as a brand." |
![]() Delightindisorder "I would like to have the attatched image branded onto the upper portion of my back with the words Memento Mori (remember that you must die) inscribed below the image, in stylized letters. I current have a small tattoo on the back of my neck that means rebellion. I also have a half-naked woman that takes up a third of my back. The woman represents passion, life, and sexuality. The purpose of the branding will be to contrast my existing tattoos, while at the same time, remind me of my imminent death." |
![]() Magdalena (aka Poni) "The reason I want to be branded is simple...it's a form of art. I only hope that the design I've created can be used for this purpose. It doesn't have to be exact...as I'm sure that branding is not as detailed. I am an artist...and I would truly love to be wearing my "work" than just seeing it on paper..." |
![]() spunky "I'd like this brand (the flower part of the logo) because I am from Saskatchewan, but as of April 27th I'm moving away to Ontario. I want a tribute to the province of my roots, and I like this method of doing it." |
![]() Joe "The brand that I am planning on getting consists of five Egyptian symbols representing eternal protection, life, stability/strength, happiness/strength, and soul/spirit. These symbols would each be approximately 1 1/2 inches tall and would descend down my spine in this order. I am interested in different language symbols and their meanings, and I think that not only will this brand be beautiful, but have signifigance to me." |
![]() darkangel "What I would like to get branded into me is a scorpion. I would like to get a scorpion brand above my left nipple, about 6 inches long and 3-4 inches wide. I have both nipples double pierced and i think the brand would make a great addition to my body." |
![]() Butafly "I have been wanting to get my back branded for about a year. I have finally perfected the design. I think that it would look great, and I plan to have it enlarged with tattoo finishing around the scars." |
![]() visinegod "To me it symbolizes a stage my life. The time in my life where I used drugs and other things to support my self, it is also a symbol that commemorates my mother who has passed on." |
![]() Nicx (aka the LostMayan) "It is basically a Maori-style (designed by myself) tribal outline with a ram icon at the top in Scythian form. I have long felt that my arm could appear more visually appealing with something on it to capture the eye. I chose the Scythian ram because I wanted an animal icon as a sort of natural link to the animalkind of this planet and also wanted it to have a connection with the human ancestry of that region. As for the tribal marks, I have always found the contrasts and sharp flowing lines of the Maori style to be the absolute best treat for one's eyes." |
![]() Wilhelm "I have wanted this image on the top of my right foot for a long time. It was a source of mysticism for the Eygptians. It has facinated me becase they exalted a creature of such "low importance," the dung beetle. I come from a lower middle class family and have had to fight tooth and nail to get to the school that I am at now. Branding are traditionally signs for societal outcasts, which I feel I represent to a lot of people. Especially the rich kids here. The piece would remind me that not everything which crawls is all that small." |
